Villa in São João das Lampas, Sintra

Situated in São João das Lampas on an 8,476.00 sqm plot of land, this single-family villa boasts a footprint area of 196 sqm and a total construction area of 392 sqm, with access from the west side of the plot road São João road.

The villa’s location was chosen to preserve the pre-existing stone-walled structures on the site, indicative of past buildings that are to be conserved.

The architectural design features two volumes, with the smaller 2nd-floor volume subtly protruding northwards to avoid disrupting the site’s original layout. Balconies are strategically placed on the 2nd floor, facing north, to allow for the utilization of the 1st floor’s roof space for south and west-facing balconies, ensuring no overlap with existing features.

Inspired by traditional stone and whitewashed houses found in the village, the project incorporates a ground-floor volume covered in stone and a simple white upper floor volume. The gabled roof of the 2nd floor, clad in white lacquered zinc tiles, pays homage to Casa Branca by Raul Lino, a holiday residence built in 1920 in Azenhas do Mar.

In terms of urban integration, the construction is designed to blend seamlessly with the landscape and surrounding properties. The building’s scale is minimized from the public road and neighboring buildings to the north, while the south and west-facing views highlight the white surfaces in harmony with the surroundings.

Spatial organization was influenced by orientation, with the ground floor living spaces and office facing west for direct access to the exterior terrace and pool. The upper floor accommodates the private bedrooms for a more secluded living area.
