Eco Resort L’ecole

The Eco Resort L’ecole, nestled in Água Travessa in the municipality of Abrantes, stands as a testament to the seamless blend of sustainable architecture and the celebration of the region’s natural heritage. Designed to accommodate visitors seeking a deep connection with nature, the resort offers an array of outdoor activities, all within a setting of remarkable beauty and tranquillity.

The prominent cork oak trees, iconic to the local landscape, impart a distinct character to the resort. Cork, one of the most valuable products derived from these trees, is central to the resort’s construction. This environmentally friendly and sustainable material has been skilfully employed to clad both the exterior and interior spaces. Notably, the multi-purpose pavilion showcases cork’s dual role, providing both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits such as thermal and acoustic insulation, further underlining the resort’s commitment to sustainability.

Beyond offering accommodation and recreational activities, the resort serves as a hub for environmental education. Visitors are invited to observe the rich local flora and fauna up close, while also gaining insight into the importance of ecosystem preservation and the sustainable use of natural resources, such as cork.

The Eco Resort L’ecole project involved the meticulous restoration of a disused primary school, which has been transformed into a restaurant. This revitalised building acts as a central support to the six residential units constructed on the grounds. These units, ranging from T1 to T2, are designed with a minimalist architectural ethos, where form and function coalesce to create warm and inviting spaces, ideal for short stays.

In essence, the Eco Resort L’ecole is more than just a tourist destination; it exemplifies how architecture can harmonise with nature, honouring the past while fostering a more sustainable future.
